Kallaghan Sits Down To Reveal His 2023 Favourites

Joining us in conversation this week is the talented Producer and DJ Kallaghan: presenting this exclusive interview, we dive into his personal favourites from throughout 2023. Having stepped out to make his mark on the Electronic Music genre, presenting a powerful signature sound and magnetic stage persona, Kallaghan appears as one of the most exciting talents on the scene today, paving his own unique way as fans around the globe become captivated by his innovation and originality. So, today we’re thrilled to be sitting down with him and discovering more about the artists, sounds, and genres that inspired him throughout 2023.

Can you share your overall impressions of the Electronic music landscape in 2023? What stood out to you in terms of trends and developments?

One noticeable trend is the increasing intensity among DJs, with more Techno sets and less emphasis on lyrics. As a Rock enthusiast at heart, I’m entirely comfortable with these shifts.

Could you list a few of your absolute favorite tracks or releases from the past year, and what makes them special to you?

Chase and Status dropped ‘Badadan’, such a huge track. I don’t spin DnB but I have a lot of UK Garage influences in my music.

‘Fein’by Travis Scott, sick Energy!

‘Rumble’ by Fred Again and Skrillex, such a classic.

Were there any tracks from emerging artists that caught your attention and deserve recognition?

I collaborated with Bryce Case on ‘AM I RIGHT’ and it was a blast. It’s my most “commercial” track, and Bryce is not only an incredible singer but also an awesome person. His melodic style is top-notch, and his voice gives off that Justin Bieber vibe.

What genres or sub-genres of Electronic music resonated with you the most this year, and why?

Phonk and Melodic Techno have been my two favorite sub genres this year.

Did you discover any new genres or niche scenes that you found particularly intriguing?

I really feel like people are looking for harder and harder genres. I went full on Future Bass in Aspen this year and I was surprised to see “the pit” goin like a Rock show. Made me want to play the guitar live, and its coming in my next shows haha!

As a Producer, did you come across any groundbreaking production techniques, hardware, or software innovations in 2023 that significantly influenced your music?

In ‘Wasting Time’, I actually ran a guitar through my Moog Sub37. I recorded loads of guitars to shape my pads and build-ups lately and intentionally avoided using samples as much as I can.

Are there any production tools or plugins that became essential to your creative process during the year?

My Avedis Audio MA-5 preamp is a must-have, whether I’m producing vocals for artists like Falling in Reverse or using my Moog Sub37. Always with me, it’s a backpack essential! I also rely heavily on my HD-820 headphones for clear references.

Recently added to my setup is the Allen & Heath CQ-12T; compact, yet with top-notch sound, it’s perfect for podcasts on the go.

I’ve also expanded my plugin collection with the Plugin Alliance bundle, enjoying the versatility it offers with my universal audio interfaces.

Were there any artists or influences outside of the Electronic music world that left an imprint on your work in 2023?

I originated from the Rock industry, having produced bands such as Falling In Reverse, Davey Suicide, and The World Alive for several years. That definitely shaped the way I create Electronic Music and the energy in my DJ sets. Working with Ronnie Radke every other week in LA really influenced the way I approach live shows and big rooms.

Aside from music, were there any standout favorites from the past year that left a lasting impression on you? This could include favorite films, books, technology advancements, or any other personal highlights you’d like to mention.

My favorite Artists are Laws, H.R giger (creator of Alien) and my dad! Haha I got his paintings tattooed all over my left arm. Talk about a lasting impression… lol

What can your fans and the Electronic music community expect from you in the new year? Any upcoming projects, releases, or performances that you’re excited to share?

There are several exciting releases on the horizon, with ‘Pyramid’ marking my inaugural release for the year coming, numerous festivals are in the pipeline, and I’m thrilled about the upcoming performances. I’m presently working in crafting a set featuring lots of guitars and power riffs.

As we end our interview with Kallaghan, we thank him for his time and look forward to his next year within Electronic Music; sure to bring more striking music and unforgettable live shows, 2024 will no doubt be an exciting year for the talented Producer and DJ. So, don’t forget to follow him across social media as Kallaghan is surely one to keep a close eye on.
